ABOUT ME:
I’m Reeta Ek (MA), a Helsinki-based freelance surface pattern and textile designer with a background in fine arts. I work with commercial print and surface pattern design for fashion, lifestyle and home textile brands, as well as illustration and selected graphic design projects.
I graduated with a Master’s degree in Textile Design from Aalto University in 2015. My Master’s thesis marked the starting point for an ongoing series of art prints, which I continue to develop and sell internationally. Alongside commissioned work, these prints form an important part of my artistic practice.
Since graduating, I have collaborated with brands such as Nanso, Marimekko and Lapuan Kankurit, creating textile prints, surface pattern collections and illustration work for both seasonal collections and commissioned projects. Over the years, I have worked in close collaboration with Nanso in a long-term partnership spanning over a decade, while also working freelance with other brands, studios and agents.
In parallel with textile and pattern design, I have extensive experience in graphic design and illustration, developed in parallel with my textile design practice. My work in this area has focused on visual identities, printed materials and illustration for commercial and editorial contexts.
In 2017, I was selected as Young Designer of the Year, becoming the first textile designer to receive the award in its history. The recognition reflects my interest in combining artistic thinking with functional, production-ready design.
I live and work in Lauttasaari, an island just off the coast of central Helsinki. I share a studio space with my ceramicist sister and a group of fellow designers and makers, which brings a strong sense of community into my everyday work. My family includes my husband and our two teenage sons. True to the Finnish stereotype, I’m somewhat introverted, and outside work I enjoy good coffee, crime fiction and politics-focused podcasts. I love walking, Pilates and swimming, am a slightly obsessive blueberry picker, and enjoy cross-country skiing —especially adventurous trips in the fells of Lapland, away from prepared tracks.
My work is rooted in drawing and pattern-making, with a focus on rhythm, repetition and visual clarity. It reflects a Scandinavian approach to design, combining graphic structure and abstraction with a hand-drawn sensibility rather than decorative excess. I am available for freelance projects and collaborations with brands, studios and agents looking for original print, surface pattern design and illustration.
Over the years, my art prints have been used in curated interior settings, including hotels and other public spaces in Finland and abroad. You’re welcome to get in touch if my work feels relevant to you.

Olen Reeta Ek (MA), Helsingissä asuva freelance-tekstiili- ja pintasuunnittelija, ja taustani on kuvataiteessa. Työskentelen kuosien, printtien ja tekstiilisuunnittelun parissa muodin, sisustuksen ja lifestyle-brändien kanssa, ja teen myös kuvituksia sekä graafisen suunnittelun projekteja.
Maisterin lopputyöstäni vuonna 2015 sai alkunsa taidejulistesarja, jota kehitän edelleen ja myyn kansainvälisesti. Valmistumiseni jälkeen olen tehnyt yhteistyötä muun muassa Nanson, Marimekon ja Lapuan Kankureiden kanssa, ja Nanso on ollut pitkäaikaisin asiakkaani jo yli kymmenen vuoden ajan.
Vuonna 2017 minut valittiin Vuoden nuoreksi suunnittelijaksi, ensimmäisenä tekstiilisuunnittelijana palkinnonsaajien joukossa. Työssäni korostuvat erilaiset luonnostelumenetelmät (mark-making) yhdistettynä digitaaliseen piirtämiseen.
Asun ja työskentelen Lauttasaaressa, ja jaan työhuoneen keraamikkosiskoni ja muiden muotoilijoiden kanssa. Perheeseeni kuuluu mieheni ja kaksi teini-ikäistä poikaa. Olen suomalaisittain hieman introvertti, nautin hyvästä kahvista, murhamysteereistä ja politiikka-aiheisista podcasteista. Tykkään myös kävelystä, pilateksesta ja uimisesta. Olen lähes maaninen mustikanpoimija sekä rakastan murtomaahiihtoa - erityisesti seikkailumielessä, Lapin tuntureilla ja poissa valmiilta laduilta.
Olen käytettävissä freelance-projekteihin ja yhteistyöhön brändien, suunnittelutoimistojen ja agenttien kanssa, jotka etsivät printti-, kuosi- ja kuvitusosaajaa.
